Upon graduation in 1980, Darlene obtained employment at an artistic salon in Charlottetown where she was eventually promoted to management. During her eight years with this salon she pursued years of extensive education, including courses at Vidal Sassoon Academy in Manchester, England.
After advancing her educational skills, Darlene was asked to train in Ontario as a member of Joico's artistic team. She became a gold seal master colorist and returned to PEI to train stylists throughout the province. This title was crucial when training the staff of her own salon, Shear Talent which she incorporated in 1991.
Darlene has set high standards for all stylist employed at Shear Talent where continued education is mandatory. The team at Shear Talent has traveled to such places as: New York City, Vancouver, Toronto and Europe, advancing their skills to the level of service Darlene feels Charlottetown deserves. Having a belief and respect for each member of her team is the mantra Darlene uses when managing her salon.
Competitions have also played a huge role in developing her craft, "competitions allow me to let loose creatively and work with my peers on a national level". Darlene has placed in the top three each time she has entered a national competition.
Darlene has also let loose creatively while producing and directing numerous hair fashion shows throughout the Maritimes in benefit of various charities, including: the Boys and Girls Club and Aids PEI.
"I have the best job in the world, coming into the salon everyday and working with people who leave feeling really good about themselves."
